This is pretty amazing stuff. I’ve only started really taking serious pictures about a year ago. This is my first recongnition of any type. Trying to soak it up.
Alot of folks are asking “how’d you do it?”. The Chimney rock is located just next door to the Ghost Ranch. First you need to do a good hour plus hike up to the top of the mesa and hope for good sun. The hike isn’t easy but the views are so worth it. Visit the Ghost Ranch online: GhostRanch.Org. I used a Nikon D90 with a very reasonably priced WIDE Tokina 12-24mm lens. They run about 399 dollars and for the most part have great reviews. You can find them used for 300. Setup on a tripod, I always use apreture priority or P setting and then do a three shot bracket or bracketing shot with a plus and minus 2 exposure comp. I then blend the photos in Photoshop or Photomatix for a High Dynamic Range photo. I usually keep my HDR’s pretty mellow. The single correctly exposed shot (from the bracking group) looks VERY similar to this shot. However I use the HDR because it brings out the contrast in the clouds that my eyes see naturally.

Monument Valley

The photo to the left is an example of an over the top HDR. But I liked it and felt it was a bit different than all the other millions of photos taken at MV.
A collection of photos from a recent trip to Monument Valley in Arizona. Two visits into the park, one at night and one early at 6am the next morning. See the full Gallery here: Monument Valley Gallery
